01 Nov Get Booked – I Wish My Teacher Knew
On the occasion of Teacher’s Day NFK pays a tribute to all the teachers who make a world of a difference to each student sitting in their classroom. This month we recommend a book that became a phenomenon across the globe and it all started with one insightful question from Kyle Schwartz, a grade three teacher. She asked her students to fill in the blank ‘I wish my teacher knew…’
The astounding, shocking, moving and sensitive answers from children in her class and eventually beyond that compelled Kyle Schwartz to spread this movement and eventually chronicle her experiences in a book. A beautiful read for parents, educators and students. The book chronicles how children can and often do surprise us adults with their insightful, innocent and sometimes wise way of looking at their life, and the lives of those around them.
#NFK tip – Practice the same exercise at home. Ask all your family members to be a part of this activity. Write down the names of all your family members on various chits, throw it all together in a jar and have each person pull out a chit. Then address your answer to the family member whose name appears on your chit. For e.g. If your child pulls out his/her grandma’s name, nudge him/her to complete the statement “I wish my grandma knew…” and share the answer with everyone at the table. The answer could be humorous, emotional, sensitive or crazy – don’t limit the creativity of your child. Eventually you will see how the game brings some amazing truths and perspectives to the forefront, eventually strengthening the bond of your family unit.
